DARIO FO

ROSA FRESCA E AULENTISSIMA E ALTRE GIULLARATE

Ahiiii. Beat yourselves. Beat your selves. Ahiiiiah!
And you rulers, you usurers,
You will suffer misfortune,
For you have spat in the face of Christ,
Enriching yourselves with ill-gotten gains. Beat yourselves!
You who have squeezed, as a person would crush grapes,
The money out of those who sweat and toil.
Ahiiii. Beat yourselves. Beat yourselves. Ahiiiiah!

(from Mistero Buffo)

Dario Fo revisits once again his masterpiece “Mistero Buffo”, which one could translate as “grotesque performance”: the grotesque theatre has always been the main form of popular expression as well as provocation. His performance was realized in collaboration with Felice Cappa. It starts from an original interpretation of a fundamental text of the early Italian minstrels literature, but soon turns to the use of the “grammelot”, the fictional language that minstrels before and comedians later used as they were traveling performers voyaging through different people and languages and furthermore this was a mean to avoid censorial laws by using a language not totally understandable.
