The World Heritage Festival is introduced by a conference - performance of DARIO DEL CORNO on the Dionysian poem by Nonnos of Panopolis, accompanied by lectures of Eva Cantarella, Maria Grazia Ciani and Monica Centanni. 8 July 2006, Ipogeo di Piazza Duomo.

The World premiere of Dionysus born three times, by GIORGIO BARBERIO CORSETTI, is based on the epic poem by Nonnos of Panopolis. From 11 - 20 July 2006 at the Latomie del Paradiso with the French Circus company DARE D'ART.

Infra Espace, a symphonic installation for light, fumes and electronic music by the French trio F.E. CHANFRAULT, J.M. CHOMAZ and L. KARST can be seen & heard for the first time in Italy from 11 to 13 July 2006, San Giovannello.

As on of the most unusual couples of Italian theatre, ANTONIO REZZA & FLAVIA MASTRELLA delight with Pitecus from 12 - 16 July and continue from 18 - 22 July with Me before the World première of their new production Bahamut, 25 - 29 July 2006, always Galleria Montevergini.

From 17 to 19 July 2006, three exceptional video documents of masterpieces by American director ROBERT WILSON are presented at the Ipogeo di Piazza Duomo: Einstein on the Beach, Hamlet, I La Galigo.

The Italian première of Homebody/Kabul, written by Tony Kushner, shows the internationally acclaimed actress ANNA GALIENA in an intense role under the direction of MARCO CARNITI. 20 - 21 July 2006, San Giovannello.

ANOUSKA SHANKAR, daughter of the legendary Indian sitar virtuoso, proposes two concerts as encounters of cultures and sounds between east and west with traditional Indian instruments, cello, violin, piano and electronics:
A Night of Raga, 21 July 2006, Noto. Concert for Dawn, 22 July 2006, Latomie del Paradiso.

Pepe & Stella is a special shadow theatre event dedicated to the children of Siracuse which is presented by the TEATRO GIOCO VITA. Piazza dei Cavalieri di Malta, 21 July; Palazzolo Acreide 22 July; Sortino 23 July 2006.

The Ortigia Festival also hosts the special project Cantieri Siciliani, a series of creations by Sicilian artists from 21 to 30 July 2006 with the concert ISOLASUONA, a dance-theatre piece by EMMA SCIALFA & MOTOMIMETICA; a performance dedicated to the sailors by writer and actor ENZO ALAIMO; Phedra by Sarah Kane under the direction of GIOACCHINO PALUMBO and a piano concert with CORRADO GRECO.

 

 

Commissioned by the Venice Biennial of Dance 2006, Chi è devoto is based on ADRIANA BORRIELLO's ongoing research on musicality and movement, fruit of her training at Béjart’s Mudra School and her work with Rosas. Latomie del Paradiso, 23 July 2006.

With The Seven in Thebes, MICHELA LUCENTI and her company BALLETTO CIVILE freely interpret Aeschylus's symbolic tale of the Seven Against Thebes through movement and chant at the Latomie del Paradiso, 28 - 29 July 2006.

The festival closes with a special event from the Tate Gallery London: Merma Neverdies, a recreation of JOAN MIRÓ's visual farce Mori El Merma, created in 1978 with original figures designed by the Catalan artist himself and now curated by Joan Baixas in collaboration with Elsinor Barcelona.
